Maurice Business - Antidote / Echo

You ever met someone that said, “Hey, you better take that guy seriously. They mean business.” Well we don’t have to take that in a metaphorical sense when it comes to EBM anymore as the UK-based musician Maurice Business has arrived on the scene. While there may not seem to be much to this project (the description on his Bandcamp pages are rather lackluster) he’s actually quite a catch in terms of music.
‘Antidote’ starts us off on his most recent two-track release. A nice little dance / EBM number with plenty of well-produced, punchy beats ready to hammer the crowd at your local rivethead dancefloor. Like many other projects within the EBM scene at large, however, Business is not an ideal vocalist. His voice is serviceable, but very robotic. Fitting for the scene, mediocre, average; it’s what’s expected and nothing more. ‘Echo’ is in the same vein, but a bit more melancholic. I will give Business some credit in his attempt to utilize a differing vocal technique, but sometimes the high-pitched voice doesn’t sound that great. And his attempts at singing aren’t the best.
So, we have a classic EBM release on hand here. Wonderful dance beats, rhythms, and synths, with the second of the two really grabbing my attention with fast-paced and frenetic beats and some retro influences. Maurice Business’ vocals need an overhaul, but the beats are just so damned good that they severely outweigh the negatives this time around.

info@brutalresonance.comI've been writing for Brutal Resonance since November of 2012 and now serve as the editor-in-chief. I love the dark electronic underground and usually have too much to listen to at once but I love it. I am also an editor at Aggressive Deprivation, a digital/physical magazine since March of 2016. I support the scene as much as I can from my humble laptop.
