Envy Electro-Industrial, TBM Surgyn 'Surgyn' are back with their long awaited sophomore album 'Envy'. This time around they've refined their sound, making it more punchier and glamorous than their debut. Three years have passed since their debut 'Vanity', which was a great album. Along with 'Shiv-r', in my book they made some of the more interesting music in the scene. Now they've had some time to polish their sound and the result is 'Envy'. First off let me start by saying that, yes, it is better than 'Vanity', and that makes it exceptionally good. They mix the harsher elements beautifully with their new glamsynth sound. We got a taste of this a while back when they released the new single "Feed Me Fame", a great track that gave you a sneak peak on what to expect. Later they also came out with a new single "Limousine" which is one of my favourite tracks off the album, along with "Green Heart" and "King Of Crows". The aforementioned "Green Heart" is a perfect example of some of the new stuff 'Surgyn' bring to the table this time around. It starts out with a beautiful lush synth, adding a great beat and some of the prettiest clean vocals you'll ever hear from this great Scottish duo. The refrain kicks in and as the rest of the song its simply epic and so frickin smooth. "Green heart, envy the dead no more", sends goosebumps down my spine. The production is perfect, giving just the right amount of punch but still leaving room for the sweet synth lines. Probably the best track on the album. And so the album goes on, mixing harsh with soft and pretty with ugly. Distorted vocals and clean vocals. It's a perfect balance. But there is no denying that everything goes so well together that in the end it all sounds beautiful and fabulous, a word I'm sure the band is familiar with. I've never seen 'Surgyn' live but I can imagine they're quite good. They are one of the few band that seems to care as much about their appearance as their music which would make for quite an audiovisual experience. Surgyn are currently on an Indiegogo funded US tour. So if you happen to live in the US and they're playing in an area near you, go check them out. 550
